Stef Knight

In this episode, I sit down with the incredibly talented makeup and prosthetics designer, Stef Knight, for a deep dive into their 30+ years of experience in the industry. From humble beginnings as a hairdresser and makeup artist in New Zealand to conquering the high-stakes fashion scenes of London, Stef’s journey is nothing short of fascinating. Their career spans fashion editorials and film sets, and this conversation reveals the intricate artistry, resilience, and passion that go into every project they touch.

The Accidental Entry into Makeup

Stef didn’t initially plan on a career in makeup. Like many creatives, their entry into the world of beauty was somewhat accidental. Originally starting out as a hairdresser in New Zealand, Stef began experimenting with makeup as a form of self-expression. What started as DIY methods led to a discovery: "I realised that I could do makeup because I knew how to paint. Rather than painting on a canvas, I was painting on a person." With this mindset, Stef’s career in makeup artistry began to take shape.

Breaking into London’s Fashion Scene

After mastering the basics in New Zealand, Stef ventured overseas, landing in one of the world's fashion capitals—London. For 13 years, they built an enviable portfolio, working with top-tier publications like i-D, Numero, Vanity Fair, and Vogue. Stef's ability to adapt to any scenario, be it an editorial spread or a high-fashion shoot, quickly set them apart in the competitive London scene. This period allowed Stef to hone their craft and develop the versatility that would later define their career.

Fashion to Film: A Return to New Zealand

While London offered global recognition and invaluable experience, Stef eventually felt a pull to return home. The New Zealand film industry presented fresh challenges and opportunities to apply their fashion knowledge to a new medium. Moving back allowed Stef to blend their love for beauty with a newfound passion for storytelling through film. Their expertise expanded beyond beauty makeup, delving into prosthetics, character design, and SPFx work.

Stef's film and television credits are extensive, with standout titles including Sweet Tooth, M3GAN, The Justice of Bunny King, and Savage. Their reputation on the indie scene is unparalleled, but they've also worked with A-list actors like Elijah Wood, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Jennifer Connelly, solidifying their role as a trusted designer for both large-scale productions and intimate, character-driven projects.

The Balance Between Passion and Precision

One of the key takeaways from my conversation with Stef is their approach to balancing a demanding work life with personal well-being. The intensity of fashion shoots and film sets can be overwhelming, but Stef has cultivated a range of practices to stay grounded, from mindfulness and meditation to clean living, including sobriety and veganism. "When things aren't happening, maybe it's time to try something else," Stef advises, underscoring the importance of adaptability in both personal and professional life.

A Collaborative Approach to Beauty

Stef also highlighted the importance of collaboration when designing looks for film. Whether working on massive productions or indie projects, Stef values the input of their team and the actors themselves. "You never want to be so rigid in your ideas that you are going to discount things," they explain. This openness to new ideas ensures that each makeup design supports the story in the most authentic way possible, adding depth to the character and the narrative.

Their work on set isn’t just about creating stunning visuals; it’s about being part of the storytelling process. From intricate character prosthetics to subtle beauty looks, each decision is made with the bigger picture in mind—how it will look on screen, how it complements the actor’s performance, and how it serves the story.

Lessons from a Global Career

Stef’s journey has taught them the importance of being a jack-of-all-trades. Whether it's beauty, character work, prosthetics, or hairstyling, they have mastered it all, ensuring they bring a wealth of knowledge to any set. Their time spent in global fashion hubs like London has informed their unique style, but it’s their ability to collaborate, adapt, and stay calm under pressure that has cemented their reputation as one of the best in the business.

Stef’s episode is packed with inspiration, from career insights to personal reflections, offering a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to thrive in the world of makeup and prosthetics. Whether you’re a budding artist or an industry pro, there’s something for everyone to take away from this conversation. Listen in for a fascinating journey of artistry, collaboration, and resilience.
